In July, China's railway transportation, production and operation continued to improve, investment in the fixed assets of railways continued to grow, and the total railway freight volume increased by 0.3 percent year-on-year. This was the first year-on-year increase since November 2008, and also reflects the fact that the national economy is continuing to recover.
In terms of freight transportation, in July China's railways transported 284.56 million tons of freight, up 850,000 tons or 0.3 percent year-on-year, and up 11.01 million tons month-on-month. Freight transportation maintained a trend of steady recovery.
In July, transportation demand for goods including coal, metallurgical materials and construction materials continued to increase, determining the recovery of railway freight volume and reflecting the current recovery of China's national economy and in particular its industries, said Li Jun, director of the General Department under the Transportation Bureau of China's Ministry of Railways.
Of all goods, coal has contributed most. Since October 2008, the railway freight volume of coal has dropped significantly, with a rate of decline reaching over 10 percent. However since April 2009, demand for coal has started to rebound slowly with the gradual recovery of industrial production. In June in particular, when electricity consumption peaked in the summer months, signs of recovery showed in the coal market, driving the steady increase in railway freight volume of coal.
In July, the freight volume of coal by China's railways increased by 1.9 percent year-on-year, the downturn trend was stopped, and a year-on-year increase was realized for the first time in 2009.
