The first phase construction of Jiuquan wind farm, China's frist 10-gW wind power demonstration base was launched on August 8, 2009.
Inner Mongolia, Hebei province, northeast China, northwest China and east China coastal regions are focused regions for wind power base construction. China is planning to build seven 10-gW wind farms.
By the end of 2008, over 11,600 wind turbines have been installed in China, elevating the total installed capacity to 12.17 million kilowatts, with 14.8 billion kWh electricity generated in the whole 2008.
With a 120 billion yuan (17.57 billion U.S. dollars) investment, Jiuquan wind farm is estimated to create over 5,000 jobs.
The station is designed to have an installed capacity of 5.16 million kW by the end of 2010 and 12.71 million kw by the end of 2015. It will be China's largest wind power facility upon completion.
Calculation based on Jiuquan wind farm's annual power generation of 29 billion kWh shows that 9.7 million tonnes of standard coal can be saved annually. Annual dust emission will decrease by 130,000 tonnes. Sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide emission will decrease by 110,000 and 2,930 tonnes respectively.

By 2020, the total installation capacity of the wind farms in Jiuquan will reach 20 million kw, while the total power capacity of the Three Gorges project tops 22.5 million kW. With its huge wind power capacity, Jiuquan will really be "Three Gorges on the Land".
