Hit by the international financial crisis, China's light industry exports have dropped markedly. In the second half of 2009, the China National Light Industry Council (CNLIC) will implement the Light Industry Adjustment and Revitalization Plan, and actively explore the rural market.

At present, the household appliance industry, the kitchen and bathroom industry and the furniture industry have also started to focus on the demands of the rural market. In June this year, China National Furniture Association launched a "furniture serving rural areas" campaign and is holding a China rural furniture design competition.

In fact, exports are also recovering. "In terms of monthly data, export volume bottomed out in February and began to pick up in March. Although small fluctuations still occur, the trend of recovery has essentially stabilized," said Bu Zhengfa, CNLIC president.

In addition, profits made by light industry enterprises increased slightly year-on-year and industrial profits shifted from decline to growth in the first quarter.

Between January and July this year, the overall operation of China's light industry improved. Large enterprises in the industry achieved an accumulative total industrial output of 5.73 trillion yuan, up 9.1 percent year-on-year. The accumulative production-to-sales rate reached 97 percent, up 0.62 percentage points over the first quarter.

Meanwhile, industrial production and sales volumes increased at the same time. Sectors meeting rigid domestic living needs such as agricultural food processing, and food and beverage manufacturing sectors enjoyed the most prominent increase in output value.
