As the world's largest hydropower station, the Three Gorges Power Plant has been chosen by internationally-renowned science magazine Scientific American as one of "the world's top ten renewable energy projects," reporters learned from China Three Gorges Project Corporation.
The Three Gorges Power Plant designed and installed 32 giant hydro-power generating units each producing 700,000kW, bringing the total installed capacity to over 22.5 million kW and annual generation capacity to 100 billion kW, ranking first among the world's hydropower plants. Twenty six generating units, which are located on both the left and right banks of the Yangtze River and were put into operation in October 2008, have a total generation capacity of 348.4 billion kWh, which is equivalent to saving 100 milion tons of standard coal and reducing 300 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
