On June 1, the Ministry of Commerce issued a statement announcing that it has launched an anti-dumping investigation into US- and Russia-manufactured imported grain oriented flat-rolled electrical steel (silicon steel), and a countervailing investigation into US-manufactured imported grain oriented flat-rolled electrical steel.

In response to reporters' questions, the ministry's spokesperson Yao Jian said China's trade remedy investigations strictly comply with relevant World Trade Organization (WTO) regulations and domestic trade remedy laws.

Yao said the investigations were initiated after China's silicon steel industry filed a formal application to the ministry. Once its review had determined that conditions for filing the case were met, the ministry decided to establish a case in accordance with the law and launch investigations.

He reiterated that China has always adopted an extremely cautious attitude toward trade remedy investigations and the relevant trade remedy measures merely aim to correct unfair trade practices.
