China, US trade ministers to meet on a variety of big issues

US Commerce Secretary: US, China must lead on clean energy

China-US commerce ministers call for joint efforts to resist protectionism

On July 15, Chen Denming, China's Minister of Commerce meet with the visiting US Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke in Beijing. Both sides agreed that steady Sino-US trade ties are in line with the common interest of the two countries.

Chen emphasized that China is firmly opposed to protectionism and is committed to open market in trade and investment. He also said that China is highly concerned about the US' anti-dumping and countervailing investigations on some Chinese products and the ban on Chinese poultry products.

As for the issues of clean energy and climate Change, Chen said that the Chinese government attach great importance to dealing with climate Change and is making efforts in energy conservation and emission cut. China is willing to cooperate with the US in relevant technology and investment. China stands against this proposal of "carbon tariffs", he said.

Secretary Locke said that the United States also stands against protectionism. A more open market and closer cooperation are the keys to solve the current crisis. The US pays great attention to China's concerns and is looking forward to finding solutions to these issues through negotiation. He expects further cooperation between the two sides on clean energy and dealing with climate change, he added.

Gary Locke also noted the U.S. Government's support for a U.S. Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai Expo.
