The volume of retail trade in the euro zone grew by 0.3 percent in August from the previous month, the European Union's statistics bureau Eurostat said on Friday.
Compared with August 2007, the retail sales index decreased by 1.8 percent in the 15-nation zone sharing the same currency.
In July, it increased by 0.1 percent month on month while dropping by 1.8 percent year on year.
In August, "food, drinks and tobacco" rose by 0.7 percent in the euro zone from the previous month. The non-food sector grew by0.1 percent.
In the 27-nation EU, retail sales rose by 0.4 percent in August from the previous month, but fell by 0.2 percent compared with a year ago.
Among the member states for which data were available, total retail trade rose in 10, fell in seven and remained unchanged in Denmark on monthly basis. Luxembourg recorded the highest increase of 6.8 percent, while Lithuania saw the sharpest decrease of 2.5 percent.
