Economic growth in both the euro zone and the European Union (EU) will be close to a stand-still next year due to the ongoing global financial crisis, the European Commission said in a forecast on Friday.

The euro zone economy will expand by merely 0.1 percent in 2009, while the EU economy is expected to grow by 0.2 percent, according to the forecast.
