Sony Corp. said Thursday its group net profit in the six months through September surged to a record 140.17 billion yen (1.23 billion U.S. dollars), more than quadrupled from a year earlier.

Sony's consolidated operating profit for the first half of fiscal 2007 rose to 189.79 billion yen (1.66 billion dollars). Group sales hit an all-time high of 4.06 trillion yen (35.61 billion dollars), up 12.8 percent, the company said.

The robust growth were driven by Sony's successful sales of electronics products such as digital cameras as well as the Japanese yen's depreciation against other major foreign currencies.

With such bullish performance, the company raised its estimation of group net profit for the whole fiscal 2007 to total 330 billion yen (2.89 billion dollars). Meanwhile, full-year group operating profit is estimated at 450 billion yen (3.95 billion dollars), six times more than the fiscal 2006 level.

Sony said sales in the electronics business rose 16.3 percent in the fiscal first half to 3.09 trillion yen (27.11 billion dollars), with brisk sales of its Cyber-shot digital cameras and Vaio personal computers. Operating profit at the electronics division soared to 190.97 billion yen (1.68 billion dollars).

In contrast, Sony's liquid crystal display television Bravia was unprofitable. Besides, the electronics giant's game division also stays sluggish, with its operating loss increased to 125.89 billion yen (1.10 billion dollars).
