A total of 3,618 lots of jade, gems and pearls were sold at the 13-day mid-year Myanmar gems emporium which ended here Monday evening, the official newspaper New Light of Myanmar said Tuesday, without disclosing the total sale value.
The 16th Mid-Year Gems Emporium, sponsored by the state and held at the Myanmar Gems Emporium Hall and the Convention Center on the basis of competitive bidding and tender, gathered a total of 3,616 merchants from 16 countries and regions covering China, China's Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, India, Italy, Britain, Japan, Australia, the United States and Canada.
The products displayed in the emporium were almost all from private enterprises and worth about 230 million U.S. dollars at floor prices, officials of the sponsoring committee said earlier.
In the 44th annual Myanmar gems emporium held in March this year, 3,652 lots of jade, gems and pearl worth 148 million euros (185 million U.S. dollars were sold, according to official statistics.
In July this year, a special gem, jade and pearl sale, which attracted some 4,000 merchants including 2,437 foreigners, 4,665 lots were sold.
Myanmar started its annual gem shows in 1964, introducing the mid-year one in 1992 and the special one in 2004.
Myanmar, a world-known producer of gems, boasts ruby, diamond, cat's eye, emerald, topaz, pearl, sapphire, coral and a variety ofgarnet tinged with yellow.
According to the state-run Myanmar Gems Enterprise (MGE), of Myanmar's top 10 exporters for the fiscal year 2006-07 which were dominated by the state sector, the MGE stood the third with a gem sale value of 296.9 million dollars after Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise and the Myanmar Timber Enterprise.
The government's Central Statistical Organization revealed that in 2006-07, Myanmar produced 20,458 tons of jade and 20.879 million carats of gems including ruby, sapphire, spinel and peridot, as well as 240,595 mommis pearl.
