Vietnam plans to construct a new North-South railway, which will allow trains to run at a speed of up to 350 km per hour, with total investment of some 33 billion U.S. dollars, according to local newspaper Vietnam News on Friday.
At a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai on Dec.27, the state-owned Vietnam Railway Corporation suggested the government to build the new rail route with the total length of 1,630 km, 100 km shorter than the existing line. The high-speed
railway project is expected to cost 33 billion dollars, with Japan being the major sponsor.
Rail sections linking Hanoi capital and central Vinh city, and central Nha Trang city and southern Ho Chi Minh City would be constructed first.
At the meeting, Hai asked the corporation to speed up preparations for the future high-speed railway, pledging that further state funds would be made available if required. He said the corporation should invite bids from outside consultants, instead of appointing a service provider as previously planned.
