Vietnam plans to host 4.8-5 million international arrivals this year, rising 14.3-19 percent against last year, a local tourism body told Xinhua on Wednesday.
In 2007, Vietnam welcomed more than 4.2 million foreign visitors, of whom 61.6 percent came to the country for tourism, over 15.9 percent for business, 14.2 percent for visiting relatives, and 8.2 percent for other purposes, said the Tourism Promotion Department under the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism.
China was Vietnam's biggest tourism market last year with 574, 600 Chinese people visiting Vietnam, followed by South Korea with 475,400, Japan with 418,300 and the United States with 408,300.
This year, Vietnam will intensify training personnel, especially tourist guides, developing tourism infrastructure nationwide, fostering tourism promotion abroad, and hosting more national and international cultural events such as Hue festival and Miss Universe 2008 pageant, the department said.
It added that the country will keep on tapping such traditional markets as Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, North America and Western Europe.
