The Myanmar finance authorities revoked the business licenses of two customs clearing companies and 18 customs agents in 2007, according to Monday's edition of the local journal Voice published in advance on Sunday.

These companies and agents, allegedly linked with corruption, were temporarily stopped to run their business for a period of up to six months, the Director-General of the Customs Department was quoted as saying.

In 2006, nearly 500 customs staff members including high-ranking ones were reportedly punished. Of them, over three dozens were sentenced to long terms in prison, legal sources said earlier.

The sacked customs service members have been replaced by more than 400 new customs members since early 2007, reports said.

Since late 2006, the authorities have taken action against many malpractice in response to public complaints invited by the government ministries in a drive to bring about clean administration.

Ministries which have invited such public complaints also include those of home affairs, energy, rail and road transportation, forestry, the Yangon City Development Committee as well as the Supreme Court or courts at various levels, Attorney-General's Office and Myanmar Advocates Council.

The authorities said its has occasionally instructed service personnel to discharge duties uprightly and honestly while the respective ministries are taking systematic measures in serving the national interest.

In line with this, the government has laid down formal procedures for the people to make complaints so that service personnel cannot commit misbehavior and misconduct over the people, the authorities stressed.
