The Myanmar Airways International (MAI) will resume its flight services from Yangon to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur starting the middle of this month after the services for the two routes were suspended for about three months, a local news journal reported Monday.
Using 114-seat A-319 new aircraft, the MAI will re-start the services to the two Southeast Asian destinations on Jan. 15 with daily flight services to Bangkok and thrice a week to Kuala Lumpur, the Weekly Eleven News said, adding that its Yangon-Singapore flight schedule will remain unchanged as usual that is also thrice a week.
The MAI temporarily stopped its flight services in October last year to the two destinations for security failure with its aircraft used in the two air routes, the airline claimed earlier.
Due to no longer having full airline insurance, the MD-82 aircraft, which operated before in the two air routes, were returned to the manufacturing company and the present new aircraft was bought, it said.
Previously, the MAI once had direct flight between Yangon and China's Hong Kong but suspended afterwards for market reason.
MAI is a joint venture between the state-run Myanmar Airways and the Region Air of Singapore set up in 1993 for sole international service covering flight destinations of Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
Besides the MAI serving international flights, there are four other Myanmar airlines operating domestic flights including one state-owned Myanma Airways (MA) and three private airlines -- Air Mandalay, Yangon Airways and Air Bagan.
The three Myanmar private airlines, in addition to their domestic flights, have also extended their services as regional flights to Chiangmai, Phuket, Bangkok and Singapore respectively.
However, the Air Bagan's Singapore flight had to be suspended in October due to sanctions by the United States, the airline said.
In addition to these private airlines, there are also 15 foreign ones flying Yangon which include Thai Airways International, Indian Airlines, Qatar Airways, Silk Air, Air China,China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Hong Kong Express Airways, Mandarin Airlines, Malaysian Airlines, Bangkok Airways, Jetstar Asia, Phuket Airline and Thai Air Asia.
Of the foreign airlines, the Hong Kong Express Airways was the latest introduced in November.
