New Zealand shares ignored a strong day across the Tasman Sea, closing nearly flat after a mixed session on Monday, with the NZSX-50 benchmark index closed up just 3.6 points, or 0.09 percent, to 3,711.73 on a robust turnover of 114 million NZ dollars (90.2 million U.S. dollars).
Contact Energy continued to make a strong recovery due to rising power prices in a dry summer. It rose 0.10 NZ dollars to 7.86 NZ dollars.
However, Fletcher Building was still struggling ahead of its half year result this month, ending down 0.21 NZ dollars to 9.95 NZ dollars on Monday.
Top stock Telecom rose 0.04 NZ dollars to 4.11 NZ dollars ahead of its second quarter result on Friday and an international report that the stock was oversold.
Elsewhere, Air New Zealand gained 0.04 NZ dollars to 1.82 NZ dollars, Fisher & Paykel Appliances rose 0.01 NZ dollars to 2.91 NZ dollars.
Sky TV down 0.06 NZ dollars to 5.16 NZ dollars; Sky City down 0.01 NZ dollars to 4.35 NZ dollars.
