The London Stock Exchange, which opened lower on Monday, recovered from early losses by midday.
The FTSE 100 index gained 37.40 points to 6,066.60, with its European shares being ahead at midday.
Among the highest gains were for Royal Bank of Scotland, builder Taylor Wimpey, pension provider and insurer Friends Provident, as well as Anglo-American.
