Japanese top automaker Toyota Motor Corp. has urged Indonesia to expand the capacity of car terminal at Jakarta's Tanjung Priok Port due to expected higher export sales from the country, local press reported Friday.
Local subsidiary Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMI) said the terminal's capacity would soon no longer be adequate for the country's car exports, reported The Jakarta Post newspaper.
Toyota expects a 40 percent increase in its exports from Indonesia this year.
According to data from the Industry Ministry, the number of cars and components exported by Indonesian manufacturers is rising.
In 2007, car manufacturers here exported around 55,000 cars overseas with a total value of 2.1 billion U.S. dollars, up from 30,000 cars and 1.7 billion dollars in 2006.
This year, the ministry expects manufacturers to export 75,000 to 85,000 units valued at about 2.9 billion dollars.
The total capacity of 350,000 cars per year at the terminal is likely to be inadequate within three years, TMMI chief of corporate planning Irwan Priyantoko told the daily. Source:Xinhua
