Toyota Motor Corp. may invest in Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. (MHI)'s project to develop small passenger planes for domestic lines, Japanese media reported Wednesday.

Toyota is in the final stage of discussions over the plan and is likely to make the final decision shortly after, according to the major Asahi daily's web page.

MHI plans to build a company in charge of development, production, and sales of the first ever domestically-made jetliner of Japan in April at the earliest if orders for the 70-90 seat small plane reach 100 sets.

Toyota is considering investing 10 billion yen (97.09 million U.S. dollars) into the new company, which will be capitalized at about 100 billion yen, according to the report.

Japanese Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry will burden one third of the overall costs of about 150 billion yen, including the cost of establishing the new company.

While having decided to invest more than 50 percent of the overall costs by itself, MHI has also issued cooperation invitation to some major firms besides Toyota.
