Singapore's Minister for Transport Raymond Lim on Monday stressed that environmental sustainability can have a significant impact on Singapore's economy and its people.
The pursuit of sustainable development is certainly not confined to the transport sector alone, it is a national effort, said the minister while addressing the regional environmentally sustainable transport forum here on Monday.
The minister said that a greater push towards using public transport, reducing car usage, and improving emissions and energy efficiency will contribute significantly towards a better living environment and a better quality of life for Singaporeans.
As for the way to reduce emissions from vehicles in the country, he said that this can be achieved through the adoption of more stringent emission standards, or encouraging the use of cleaner fuels, or both.
He detailed that Singapore has since 2001 introduced tax incentives like the Green Vehicle Rebate (GVR) to encourage motorists to consider buying green vehicles.
The minister pledged that the city state will continue to monitor development in alternative fuel vehicles, and look into innovative ways to promote cleaner and more energy-efficient vehicles to improve the country's air quality. Source:Xinhua
