The Vietnamese government has asked the ministries of Finance, and Industry and Trade to shortly axe import taxes on many items, including alcohol, beer, tobacco, coffee, cooking oil and processed meat, local newspaper Vietnam Economic Times reported Tuesday.

The government has also asked the two ministries to lower import taxes on some strategic commodities under state control to encourage competition and limit monopoly.

The future tariff reduction is in line with World Trade Organization commitments and the domestic market's demand.
