Vientiane has confirmed its readiness for the 3rd Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS) Summit, scheduled on 30-31 March.
Saythong Keodouangdy, the Vice-President of the 3rd GMS Summit Organizing Committee, said in his interview on the "Vientiane Mai"(new Vientiane) daily on Friday that all the preparatory work for the regional meeting has gone smoothly so far.
"Vientiane has urged its nine districts and authorities concerned to publicize the importance of the GMS to villagers and encourage them to participate in the preparations in anticipation of the meeting," said Saythong.
"The Greater Mekong Sub-region will be beneficial to Laos, including its higher role in the international arena. The meeting will convince the international communities that Laos has made a significant progress in its socio-economic development and secure international community's understanding of Laos' needs for assistance for its socio-economic development, especially in basicinfra structure development to boost Laos' efforts to shrug off poverty," Saythong added.
The GMS Summit will review progress of, and agree on future directions of the Greater Mekong Sub-region Economic Co-operation Program (GMS Program), which involves planning and execution of sub-regional projects in nine areas of transport, energy, telecommunications, tourism, environment, human resource development, agriculture, trade facilitation and private investment.
