The trade volume between South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) in the first quarter of this year doubled from a year earlier, a South Korean government report said Monday.
According to the Unification Ministry, the bilateral trade reached about 417.3 million U.S. dollars from January to March thanks to a sharp rise in commercial trade, especially a 91 percent rise in the amount of raw materials and goods shipped into and from the joint industrial complex in DPRK's border city of Kaesong.
However, exchanges in non-commercial areas, including the South's government and civilian humanitarian aid to DPRK dropped by 20 percent, it said.
The ministry expected the Kaesong complex and other civilian cooperation projects to continue operating smoothly.
