Bangladesh's Army Chief General Moeen U Ahmed encouraged the people in the country to eat potato to reduce dependency on rice which has a shortage because of skyrocketing price, leading newspaper the Daily Star reported Thursday.
At the inaugural ceremony of a weeklong potato feast organized by Radisson Water Garden Hotel, one of the five five-star hotels in capital Dhaka, on Wednesday, Moeen said potato cannot be an alternative to rice, but a food supplement that might reduce dependency on rice.
Moeen said having potato with rice would help lower the demand for rice and control the rising prices of rice while meeting nutritional needs of a person.
The army chief said there was a bumper harvest of potato this year which the yield has reached 8 million tons.
"We have to consume 5.8 million tons of potato domestically this year, otherwise a huge quantity of it will be spoilt due to the lack of adequate storage facilities," he said.
A potato farmer might not be interested to grow the crop again next year if heavy losses are incurred this year, observed the army chief.
An army personnel's daily potato intake presently stands at 113grams, he said adding that the daily potato allocation for each army member would be increased in the next couple of months.
