Cambodian government officials and citizens have welcomed a plan recently announced by Prime Minister Hun Sen for vehicle retailers to provide license plates on purchase, as customers have complained about a set of lengthy, complex procedures to obtain them, the Mekong Times newspaper said Wednesday.

To ease the buying and selling of motorbikes and cars, buyers could get temporary number plates immediately after they buy them, Hun Sen said on May 8.

Companies selling cars and motorbikes will be delighted and buyers can fill application forms for permanent number plates at the shops, he said.

Public Works Minister Sun Chanthol welcomed the suggestion and said the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MPWT) will take it into consideration.

Chan Ty, an MPWT official expressed support for Hun Sen's statement, saying it will be convenient for drivers when they buy motorbikes or cars.

He expected the new system would also help the government control the vehicle numbers.
