Tokyo stocks close nearly 1 percent higher Thursday.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average advanced 133.19 points, or 0.94 percent, from Wednesday to 14,251.74, hitting a four-month high.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange rose 19.83 points, or 1.44 percent, to 1,392.87.
On the First Section, advancing issues outnumbered declining ones 1,305 to 341, with 76 others remaining unchanged.
Trading volume on the main section went up to 2,446.03 million shares from Wednesday's 2,212.95 million.
Volume leader Nippon Steel gained 42 yen, or over 7 percent, to641 yen.
The TSE's Second Section index rose 25.90 points, or 0.88 percent, to 2,970.23 on a volume of 60.73 million shares.
On the Osaka Securities Exchange, the near-term June Nikkei 225 index futures contract was up 150 points to 14,260.
