Japan's new vehicle sales fell by 6.1percent year-on-year to 221,377 units in May, said the Japan Automobile Dealers Association Monday.
The decline in sales came after the road-related taxes, including the tax rate for vehicle purchases, was reinstated after being temporarily lowered in April.
On a year-on-year basis, passenger car sales declined 4.4 percent to 190,695 units in May while truck sales plummeted 16.0 percent to 29,659 units. The bus sales, however, jumped 13.9 percent to 1,023 units, said the industry body.
In terms of engine size, cars with an engine of more than 2,000cc registered a rise of 3.3 percent to 84,857 units in sales while sales with smaller engines slumped 9.7 percent to 105,838 units.
Of the five major Japanese automakers, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Mazda logged a slowdown in sales while Honda enjoyed an increase.
