Fishermen around Japan suspended operations Tuesday and some of them rallied to vent grievance over soaring oil prices.
The nationwide halt of fishing operations, the first of its kind in Japan, was also aimed at gaining public awareness of the difficult situation challenging the fishing industry.
According to organizers, almost all of the about 200,000 fishing vessels in Japan stayed at port in the day.
While fishermen at some major ports blew whistles on their boats at 11 a.m. to attract public attention, several thousands fishermen and their supporters gathered in a park in central Tokyo before marching through the streets around the area of government office buildings, demanding that the government take measures such as giving subsidies to assist them.
Market watchers said the one-day "strike" may lead to the rise of marine food prices in Japan.
Japanese fishing industry bodies complained that the price of a popular kind of fuel for fishermen in Japan has tripled in the past four and a half years' time.
