Tokyo stocks fell Thursday as the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 66.25 points, or 0.51 percent, from Wednesday to 12,956.80.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 7.55 points, or 0.61 percent, to 1,238.93.

On the First Section, declining issues outnumbered advancing ones 1,113 to 482, with 118 others remaining unchanged.

Trading volume on the main section came to 1,763.19 million shares, down from Wednesday's 1,931.44 million.

Volume leader Nippon Steel gained 5 yen, or nearly 1 percent, to 524 yen.

Value leader Toyota Motor fell 80 yen, or nearly 2 percent, to 4,880 yen.

The TSE's Second Section index was down 24.45 points, or 0.93 percent, to 2,593.10 on a volume of 27.16 million shares.

On the Osaka Securities Exchange, the near-term September Nikkei 225 index futures contract was down 90 points to 12,950.
