The Philippines' leading budget airline Cebu Pacific said it will reduce the free baggage allowance for all flights to save fuel costs, starting next month.
The free baggage allowance will be reduced to 15 kilograms from20 kilograms for bookings made after September 2, said Candice Iyog, Cebu Pacific Vice President for Marketing and Product, in a statement issued Tuesday on the company's website.
"A lighter aircraft would burn less fuel so if passengers travel light, our fuel costs would likewise go down and we are able to pass on the savings to our passengers," Iyog said.
Those passengers who travel with no check-in bags will be offered a 200-peso (4.4 U.S. dollars) fare discount, according to the statement.
She added the maximum weight for allowed hand-carried luggage is still seven kilos per passenger, except for those bound for Boracay, a tourist hotspot located approximately 315 km south of Manila.
Boracay passengers are allowed to check in baggage weighing 10 kilograms and hand-carried bags weighing five kilograms.
"We are always looking for ways to reduce the fare paid by our passengers and since we are able to save on fuel when carrying less weight on our flights," Iyog added.
Cebu Pacific is also offering a 20 percent discount for prepayment of every five kilos of excess baggage through its website, ticket offices and call center.
The company's "Go Lite" discount will apply to all its fares and will be available for both domestic and international bookings.
Now in its 13th year, Cebu Pacific has the youngest aircraft fleet in the Philippines, comprised of 10 A319s, eight A320s, and two ATR72-500 aircraft, according to the statement.
