Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Thursday amid mounting concerns over the uncertain outlook for the U.S. financial sector.
The Nikkei Stock Average plunged 260.49 points to 11,489.30 from Wednesday.
The Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange shed 23.75 points, or 2.12 percent, to 1,097.68.
On the First Section, declining issues outnumbered advancing ones 836 to 819, with 64 others remaining unchanged.
Trading volume on the main section went up to 2,335.87 million shares from 2,259.53 million Wednesday.
The TSE's Second Section index fell 31.81 points, or 1.30 percent, to 2,417.09 on a volume of 70.42 million shares.
On the Osaka Securities Exchange, the near-term December Nikkei 225 index futures contract lost 320 points to 11,410. Source:Xinhua
