South Korea and the European Union (EU) are likely to sign a free trade agreement (FTA) within this year, Hubert Pirker, a chairman of the European Parliament's foreign affairs committee said here on Tuesday during his six-day visit to South Korea.
"We have had clear information from South Korea that we will come to an end to the free trade agreement before the end of 2008," said Pirker, adding that the two sides have narrowed differences on all major sticking points
Pirker arrived in Seoul on Sunday with seven other members of EU delegation to focus on three major issues of South Korea-EU's FTA and inter-Korean relations.
Regarding the global economic turmoil, Pirker said that South Korea is a strong partner to overcome the current crisis because of its healthy economy and dynamic activity in many export markets.
He also reiterated European nations' commitment to provide development aid to the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) if the country fully cooperates in international denuclearization efforts. Source:Xinhua
