Tokyo stocks fell sharply Thursday morning on overnight plunge in Wall Street.
The benchmark 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 541.06 points, or 5.68 percent, from Wednesday to 8,980.18.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange shed 51.07 points, or 5.28 percent, to 915.84.
Stocks fell across the board, with transport equipment, sea transport and electrical machinery issues among the major decliners.
