Tokyo stocks gained substantial ground Monday with the key Nikkei index jumping 5.81 percent to recover the 9,000 mark.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average advanced 498.43 points to 9,081.43 from Friday.

The Topix index on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 37.65 points, or 4.28 percent, to 916.65.
