Tokyo stocks opened lower Wednesday despite the U.S. government's latest aid package to stimulate the economy.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 77.50 points, or 0.93 percent, from Tuesday to 8,246.43.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 10.82 points, or 1.30 percent, to 820.76. The Second Section also lost ground.
