South Korean manufacturers' confidence for December fell to an all-time low amid ongoing global recession, the Bank of Korea (BOK) said Wednesday.
According to BOK, the business survey index (BSI) for manufacturers' expectations for December stood at 52, down from 65in the previous month.
The figure is the lowest since the central bank started to compile the BSI related data in January 2003, it said.
A reading below 100 means pessimists of the future economy outnumber optimists.
The BSI for the export outlook posted a record low of 77 for December while that for sales in domestic market reached 69, recording the worst level since the fourth quarter of 1998.
"Amid stagnant domestic demand, companies had a gloomy outlook as the global recession will likely also hurt South Korea's exports," said Jang Young-jae, a BOK official.
The survey came as the South Korean economy grew 0.6 percent in the third quarter from the previous three months, marking the slowest growth in four years.
