Vietnam's car sales plunged 49 percent in November of 2008 as a result of the global economic downturn that has rattled local consumer spending, the local newspaper Young People reported on Monday, citing the source with Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers' Association.

According to the association, commercial car sales reached only 2,531 out of total car sales of 5,174 by its members in November, a drop of 54 percent compared to the same period of 2007.

The November figures for Honda Vietnam sales was 101 units, down 80 percent from that of 2007's November, Ford Vietnam down 67 percent to 298 units, Mercedes-Benz Vietnam down 60 percent to 103 units and Toyota Vietnam down 33 percent to 1,465 units, said the association.

Local car producers have been turned upside down on many fronts despite of being launched a number of attractive promotion programs in an effort to push up sales, said the association.

Imported cars also experienced the same gloomy situation as the imported car sales has undergone a sharp decline even though much lower prices have been offered to cars of all kinds, said the association.
