Experts and officials from the Asia-Pacific region gathered in Singapore Thursday to discuss issues in the complex and dynamic global Intellectual Property (IP) ecosystem which has an effect on every day business dealings.
The Golbal Forum on Intellectual Property 2009 (GFIP 2009), which kicked off on Thursday, covers topics specially chosen to reflect key areas of interest in traditional fields of IP such as copyrights and design, patents and trademarks, and introduces new developing areas of interest such as strategic intellectual asset management, IP financing and valuation, and IP protection in sports and brand marketing.
"With the present turmoil in the regional and global economy, GFIP 2009 provides a timely platform for businesses, entrepreneurs and policy makers to keep abreast of the latest developments in IPand the management of intellectual assets," said David Llewelyn, chairman of GFIP 2009.
"The forum will consider best practices on how to develop, manage and protect intellectual assets in today's uncertain economic climate," he added.
In relating to the theme of GFIP 2009 "the Evolving IP Ecosystem: Conflicts or Consensus", Jiang Zhipei, professor from Renmin University of China, told Xinhua that "the current economic situation and the rapid development of the internet have posed challenges to the IP system, which makes it necessary for the IP system to update itself to follow up the trend."
Talking about IP practices in China, Jiang said that China has enacted new measures in terms of IP protection, and will continue to make great efforts to better protect IP assets and practices in the internet era.
The two-day forum is organized by the Intellectual Property Academy of Singapore and features a line up of more than 90 international speakers and over 400 participants including IP practitioners and thought leaders, academics, businessmen and policy makers from the United States, Europe, Japan, South Korea, China, India, Australia and Southeast Asia.
