The Vietnamese Finance Ministry has decided to increase import tariffs on some kinds of milk products to help local milk producers, the local newspaper People reported Thursday.

According to the ministry's decision, import tax on fresh milk will be increased from 7 to 20 percent, uncondensed and sweet-free milk and cream from 5 to 15 percent, sweet-free milk as raw materials for finished milk products from 3 to 10 percent.

Import tariffs on other kinds of milk powder and finished canned milk products remain the same ranging from 3 to 7 percent.

The new tax rate will be effective as of March 9.
