South Korea's information technology (IT) industry marked a trade surplus in the first quarter of 2009, with the volume of exports steadily growing since last December, a government report showed Monday.

According to the report by the Ministry of Knowledge and Economy, the country's IT sector trade surplus logged 10.7 billion U.S. dollars for the January-March period, while the nation's total trade surplus in the same period marked 3.9 billion U.S. dollars.

For March alone, the trade surplus for IT industry topped 4.5 billion U.S. dollars, also larger than the total surplus of 4.1 billion U.S. dollars.

Meanwhile, exports of semiconductors, mobile phones and other IT products reached 75.1 billion U.S. dollars for the first quarter, with monthly export amounts marking a steady incline from January to March after hitting bottom at 6.51 billion U.S. dollars in late December.

IT exports stood at 6.92 billion U.S. dollars, 7.69 billion U.S. dollars, and 8.8 billion U.S. dollars in January, February, and March, respectively.

However, the nation's IT exports for March showed an on-year plunge of 26.7 percent, marking the sixth straight month to log a decrease on an annual basis, according to the report.

IT-product imports tallied 4.67 billion U.S. dollars in March, marking an on-year drop of 30.8 percent.
