Tokyo stocks closed slightly higher Thursday with the key Nikkei index up 0.13 percent as exporters were brightened by a stronger U.S. dollar.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average gained 12.62 points to 9,451.39, hitting a new closing high since May 11.
The broader Topix was up 2.74 points, or 0.31 percent, to 895.59.
Nonferrous metals, auto and mining issues were among the gainers while decliners were led by food, insurance and land transport issues.
Value leader Toyota Motor rose 100 yen, or about 3 percent, to 3,800 yen while Volume leader Mizuho Financial Group shed 1 yen, or about half a percent, to 231 yen.
On the First Section, advancing issues outnumbered declining ones 942 to 621 with 140 others remaining unchanged.
Trading volume on the main section expanded to 2,241.61 million shares 2,172.92 million from Thursday.
The TSE's Second Section index advanced 10.64 points, or 0.53 percent, to 2,009.15 on a volume of 35.84 million shares.
On the Osaka Securities Exchange, the near-term June Nikkei 225index futures contract increased 20 points to 9,450.
