India Monday asserted that it is ready to play its role in overcoming the global economic meltdown.

"India is among the fastest growing BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) economies, and we are ready to play our part in coordinating international efforts to overcome the ongoing financial and economic slowdown," Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said in a statement to the media while leaving for a three-day visit to Russia to attend the BRIC and Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit meetings.

Acknowledging that the BRIC has the potential to fuel global economic growth, Singh said: "In fact, global economic recovery is closely linked to the success of BRIC economies."

The Indian PM is also expected to meet Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari on the sidelines of the BRIC meet.

The composite dialogue between the two countries is in a stalemate following the Mumbai terror attacks last November.
