Japanese household spending edged up0.3 percent in May from a year earlier, marking the first increase since January 2008, government figures showed Tuesday.
The average monthly spending came to 285,530 yen (2,970 U.S. dollars), up 0.3 percent from a year earlier in real terms, the internal affairs ministry said.
However, the ministry said it was too early to say whether the latest data indicated that Japanese consumption was finally picking up after the worst recession since World War II.
Household spending figures are a key indicator of private consumption, which accounts for nearly 60 percent of Japanese gross domestic product.
