Spain posted a negative inflation rate for the sixth consecutive month in August, during which consumer prices fell 0.8 percent, the Spanish National Institute of Statistics said Friday.

Although prices were still showing a tendency to decline, the figure was a positive sign for the Spanish economy as it improved significantly compared with June and July, when prices fell 1.0 percent and 1.4 percent respectively.

The improvement was attributed mainly to the price of oil, which plummeted in July and dragged consumer prices to a historic low.
