Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower Monday with the key Nikkei index down 2.76 percent.
At 9:15 a.m., the benchmark Nikkei 225 Average plunged 276.99 points to 9,757.75.
The broader Topix index lost 19.02 points to 875.65.
