Indonesia, the world's largest rubber exporter, has taken measures to boost the quality of rubber in a bid to add to competitive edge, amid the start of rising global demand on the commodity, the Trade Ministry said Thursday.

Head of trade standard office of the ministry Arief Adang said that the government and the business sector have agreed to tighten the quality standard for the commodity.

"The government and the businessmen have achieved an agreement to reduce the contents of dirt (non-useful materials) in the Standard Indonesia Rubber (SIR)," Adang said.

Indonesia has enjoyed soaring price of the commodity before the global crisis last year, but then the downturn of world industries activities had sapped demand of rubber which in turn dragged down prices.

Adang said that the new standard would learn from the quality standard applied by other producing countries.
