Malaysia is expected to stimulate the number of public transport commuters from 480,000 to about 2 million by 2015 by making the public facilities more convenient, an official said on Wednesday.
To attract the people to choose public transport tools, the government has studied on a number of initiatives to make the public transportation more convenient including ensuring adequate parking facilities at train stations and increasing the frequency of bus and train services, Transport Minister Kong Cho Ha said at a press conference here on Wednesday.
The number of commuters at the Kelana Jaya light-rail train route which goes through the city center achieved a year-on-year increase of 13.3 percent in the first two months of 2010, thanks to enlarged transport capacity and waiting time shortening, he said, adding that he is optimistic on achieving the 16-25 percent growth target by 2012 set by the ministry earlier.
