The world's largest software maker Microsoft's earnings for the three months ended June 30 climbed to 3.04 billion U.S. dollars, rising 7 percent despite a hefty charge to cover the cost of defective Xbox 360 video game consoles, media reported Friday.
Revenue from server and tools software rose 15 percent to 3.08 billion dollars, and in the division that sells Office, revenue jumped 19 percent to 4.63 billion dollars.
Sales in the division responsible for the Windows operating system rose 14 percent to 3.81 dollars billion from 3.35 billion dollars in the year-ago quarter, helped by Vista adoption and strong PC sales. The software maker sold more higher-priced "premium" versions of Windows in the quarter.
Web advertising revenue rose 33 percent to 544 million dollars, but the online division widened its loss overall to 239 million dollars from 187 million dollars last year. Microsoft still trails Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. in U.S. search traffic.
"Right now we're in an investment mode," Colleen Healy, general manager of investor relations for Microsoft, said of the online business.
But McAdams Wright Ragen analyst Sid Parakh was happy with the growth rate. "It seems like they're making some progress here," he said.
