DreamWorks Animation has formed a strategic alliance with chip maker Intel aimed at improving the studio's technology for creating 3-D animated movies, the companies said Tuesday.

Under the deal, Intel will provide DreamsWorks Animation with its latest high-performance processing technologies, including future chips with multiple processing cores, as well as the expertise of its software engineers to optimize their use.

The first project to benefit from the partnership will be "Monsters vs. Aliens," slated for North America release in March 2009.

DreamWorks previously has used Advanced Micro Devices, Intel's rival in the chip market, to supply chips and other technology for its computer-animation operations. The new deal is expected to replace the studio's computing hardware that use AMD microprocessors, including 1,500 server systems and 1,000 workstations.
