Brazil's mining giant Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (Vale) Wednesday posted a net earning of 5 billion U.S. dollars for the second quarter this year, up 22.3 percent over the same period last year.

In the first quarter of 2008, the accumulated net earnings reached 7 billion dollars, up 11.4 percent from the same period last year, Vale said in a report.

The vigorous earning increase helped the company's gross revenue reach a record amount of 10.9 billion dollars in the second quarter, which represented a 22.5-percent rise from the same period a year ago.

Vale said demand for its products remained vast and its shipment of iron ore and pellets grew 7.9 percent year on year in the second quarter, reaching 78.9 million tons.
