California drivers buy more fuel-efficient hybrid cars than any other state, and most of them do it due to financial rather than environmental concerns, according to a study released Tuesday.

A total of 39,830 new hybrids were registered in California for the year to date through May, almost five times as many as in Florida, the next closet state with 8,810 registrations, said the report by the Travelers Cos. Inc. and the Polk Center for Automotive Studies.

New York, Texas and Illinois rounded out the top five states.

The top five U.S. cities for hybrid registration was also dominated by California, with Los Angeles and San Francisco takingt he top two spots with a combined 28,793 registrations, followed by New York, Washington, D.C. and Chicago.

The study found that about 70 percent of responding hybrid car owners bought their cars to take advantages of tax breaks and due to high gas prices. Only 21 percent of them said environmental concerns prompted them to buy hybrids.
